Why do employees save up to 40% when leasing a bike?
The company bike principle works in such a way that employees do not lease a company bike directly, but obtain it through their employer. This means that the monthly leasing amount, including insurance and service, is debited from their company's account.
In return, the employer reduces the employee’s gross salary. As a result, employees save on tax and social security contributions and can save up to 40% compared to buying a bike privately. For employers, the entire process is cost-neutral and involves no additional administrative effort.

In principle (unless otherwise agreed with your employer in the framework agreement), all bikes with a retail price between €749 and €11,900 including VAT can be used as a company bike. This applies to both classic bikes and e-bikes.
Absolutely! Whether you use it to get to work or to travel with your family, you can use your company bike for both business and private purposes. Unlike with a company car, there is no minimum usage requirement, no additional costs for private trips, and no requirement to use the company bike on your way to work.
If your employer covers all the costs for your company bike, you as an employee will not be taxed on it. Why not suggest this to your employer? Many employers are currently offering 100% financing as part of their employer branding or salary increase programs.
The Dienstrad platform is our digital ordering portal, where employers, employees, and bicycle dealers can find all the information they need about Deutsche Dienstrad. Once you have chosen your dream bike in the online shop or at your preferred local dealer, you can order it easily and conveniently via the platform. Here's how it works:
- Select your dream bike in the online shop
- Approval by your employer
- You will receive an email notification as soon as your company bike is ready for collection at your preferred dealer
- The handover of your company bike will be confirmed digitally at your preferred dealer
- Start riding and enjoy, whether for work or private use.
The term of your lease agreement is generally 36 months. The transfer agreement between the employee and Employer, and thus the right of use, expires automatically after this period.
Option 1: You return your company bike and choose a new bike if you wish.
Option 2: If you would like to purchase the company bicycle at the end of the transfer agreement, we will make you an offer. We aim to base this offer on the used value used for the calculation. However, we cannot guarantee this, as legal requirements may change over time.
What does Basic Service or Inspection mean?
The Dienstrad inspection is an annual visual check of the bicycle (a total of three times during the contract term) carried out by the employee’s preferred local specialist dealer.
During the leasing term, employees can make use of the visual inspection / UVV check three times: once between the 1st and 12th month after handover, once between the 13th and 24th month after handover, and once between the 25th and 36th month after handover.
The visual inspection includes all services covered as part of a general check-up and the annual UVV inspection. It is carried out according to an inspection checklist that complies with the requirements of the VSF (Verbund Service und Fahrrad), as well as the BIV and VDZ. As a qualified expert, the specialist dealer checks the bike’s roadworthiness and identifies any repair or maintenance needs.
What does Premium Service or FullService mean?
FullService is the premium option among the available service packages.
With this add-on, the Dienstrad Basic Service package is extended to include wear-and-tear repairs, including replacement wear parts. The number of wear-and-tear repairs carried out by a local specialist dealer is unlimited. You can view your available budget in the Deutsche Dienstrad platform.
Wear parts include, among others, tyres, brake pads, brake discs, brake fluid, rims, bicycle chains, drive belts, cassettes/sprockets, cogs, chainrings, gear and brake cables including outer casing, derailleur pulleys, pedals, grips, handlebar tape, hubs, freehub bodies and bottom brackets.
In addition to the bike itself, your employer can also provide you with leaseable accessories. However, this is only possible if you select the accessories together with your bike. Accessories cannot be added at a later date. Our information sheet shows which accessories are leaseable. These can include lights, pannier racks, Mudguards, and child seats, as well as bags and locks.
Comprehensive insurance for your company bike covers the costs of damage caused by any of the following:
- (Burglary) theft, including of mounted components and batteries, as well as robbery
- Damage caused by:
- (traffic) accidents
- vandalism
- damage caused by
- falling
- crashing, operating errors, damage to or destruction of batteries and electronic motor and control devices
To use the Dienstrad calculator, enter the price of your dream bike and your salary. The calculator will then show you an initial estimate of the net monthly cost of your company bike. The calculation is based on standard values, which may differ in your individual case (tax bracket, child allowances, etc.). To obtain an exact value, please contact your HR department. The actual net cost depends on your individual tax and contribution situation.
